The attributes for all encrypted values are managed from within the configuration file, including the security attribute of the login password.\n\n## Before you begin\n\nRole required: admin\n\n<table id=\"table_m2t_cv4_nhb\"><tbody><tr><td>\n\n![Set-up indicator for security phase](../image/ProgressBarSecure.png)\n\n</td></tr></tbody>\n</table>## Procedure\n\n1.  Navigate to the `agent` directory that was created when the MID Server was installed and open the `config.xml` file using a text editor such as WordPad.\n\n2.  Locate or add the parameter you want to encrypt.\n\n    For example, you might want to protect your proxy server passwords by configuring this parameter:\n\n    ```\n    <parameter name=\"mid.proxy.password\" value=\"securepassw0rd\"/>\n    ```\n\n3.  Add the encryption attribute **secure=\"true\"**.\n\n    ```\n    <parameter name=\"mid.proxy.password\" secure=\"true\" value=\"securepassw0rd\"/>\n    ```\n\n4.  Restart the MID Server.\n\n5.  Open the `config.xml` file.\n\n    The encrypted password appears as follows:\n\n    ```\n    <parameter name=\"mid.proxy.password\" secure=\"true\" value=\"encrypted:rhrfUNYRzZAI8/BkTtZmNA==\"/>\n    ```\n\n    .\n\n6.  To decrypt this or any other value in the `config.xml` file and display the value in clear text:\n\n    1.  Stop the MID Server.\n\n    2.  Set the **secure=\"true\"** attribute to **false**.\n\n    3.  Replace the encrypted value with the clear text value.\n\n    4.  Restart the MID Server.\n\n\n**Parent Topic:**[Securing and encrypting MID Server data](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ServiceNow/ServiceNowDocs/australia/markdown/australia/servicenow-platform/mid-server/mid-server-security-encryption.md)\n\n**Related topics**  \n\n\n[MID Server certificate check policies]()\n\n[MID Server configuration file security]()\n\n[MID Server authentication credentials and SOAP requests]()\n\n[MID Server unified key store]()\n\n[Enable MID Server mutual authentication]()\n\n[MID Server Azure Key Vault integration]()\n\n[MID Server command audit log]()\n\n[Rekey a MID Server]()\n\n[Add SSL certificates for the MID Server]()\n\n[Specify an external TrustStore for the MID Server]()\n\n[MID Server SSH cryptographic algorithms]()\n\n[Attach a script file to a file synchronized MID Server]()\n\n[MID Server FIPS Enforced Mode]()\n\n[MID Server Governance]()\n\n"}}
